The name “Miramar” comes from Spanish, which means “sea view”. It was named after newspaper publisher Edward W. Scripps, who settled here. Scripps’ land adjoins MCAS Scripps Ranch. The city’s name was first applied to the mesa and later applied to the surrounding area. The city’s name changed from Te Motu Kairangi to Miramar, which loosely translates as “view of the sea.”

The city, meanwhile, was given the land as a prize for a piece of property. However, the Navy did not want to give up on the land, and the area began to deteriorate. Many buildings were scrapped.
